課程概述 |
In this seminar, we will read, discuss, and evaluate recent research on a range of changes in family behaviors and household relationships from a demographic perspective. We will place particular emphasis on developing a solid understanding of trends and associated explanations as well as individual-level correlates of a variety of family behaviors. Readings are drawn not only from the demographic literature on the family but also from sociology, economics, history and human development. Seminar discussion will consider explanations and classical debates about changing family forms and family variation, as well as assess implications for empirical research and public policy. In the process of writing a research paper, you will have the opportunity to read more deeply on a substantive area of interest. |

課程要求 |
This class will give you an overview on family demography. Each week, I will introduce a specific topic covering from theoretical to empirical themes. Beginning from 10/29, each student will have a chance to be discussion leader for an assigned paper. S/he has to provide a brief summary on readings with emphasis on concepts, theories, and research approaches and to lead class discussion. In order to have an extended discussion of required papers, you are asked to write one-page feedback (thoughts, comment, and/or questions) after each class meeting. I will use the final minutes of class to summarize and address issues that were not covered. These class assignments contribute 50% of your final grade.
All students have to complete one term paper (50%). On 12/24, students have to present their initial research findings. We will listen and provide suggestions for revision. As in most graduate seminars, the standard for papers is that they will eventually be submittable for review at a conference or a professional journal. Because this is no easy task, I recommend that you get started on your papers as soon as possible. I would like to meet with everyone some time during the first few weeks of the semester to discuss what you would like to work on.
